Éowyn @ Wikia
Éowyn @ Wiki
Éowyn @ Tolkien Gateway
[Personality]
Éowyn is shown as a strong, brave, proud and independent woman, in a context where most of the female population was expected to be obedient and submissive. She clearly wishes to step out of the traditional role of women and head off to battle to win renown for herself, instead of living under the shadow of the men around her. As she once tells Aragorn, she does not fear pain or death, though she fears being held "captive" of her own gender and the expectations of the society she lives in. In the movie she mentions that "the women of her country learned to fight long ago", but most women are shown being led into safety and staying behind during battle. So it can be assumed that Éowyn truly rebels against the impositions established for the women of her place and time. Eventually, the Shieldmaiden gets her chance to prove her worth, by slaying the Wtich King of Angmar, hoping to save her Uncle.
Due to her position as a woman and one of royal blood, there are many limitations imposed on her, because of the duties she must fulfill. When her Uncle, King Théoden, becomes enthralled by Saruman's power through Gríma Wormtongue his care falls onto her, as his closest female kin. The same happens when her cousin Théodred, the King's son, is wounded in battle. Even if she does her tasks dutifully, she would wish nothing more than to ride out in battle with the Rohirrim. But as a woman, the duties to her family come before any personal glory she may wish to seek. Éowyn understands the way things are, but the limitations set upon her have made her a lonely, cold and even, one might say, bitter woman. This is remarked by Wormtongue when he tells her: Oh, but you are alone. Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink, the walls of your bower closing in about you, a hutch to trammel some wild thing in? So fair, yet so cold like a morning of pale Spring still clinging to Winter's chill.
Despite this negative feelings lingering in her spirit, Éowyn is a very kind woman. Since a young age she strongs a strong devotion to her Uncle, as he took care of her when her parents died, and she has also a deep bond with her brother Éomer and her cousin Théodred. During most of her life, the three of them will be Éowyn's most precious people, and she would do anything to protect or take care of them. Not only is her family fond of her, but also the people of Edoras, they love her and look up to her for guidance when their King is not there.
One important event in her life is her meeting with Aragorn. She idealizes the man, and falls in love with him for his bravery and skill in battle. In a way, she believes he will be the one to take her out of "the cage", and bring her to do great deeds and obtain glory. Aragorn, promised to Arwen, refuses her love and asks her to stay with her people. From the Fellowship, she also forms a deep friendship with the young Hobbit Merry, as they both have in common the wish to fight for those they care about. And, like her, his wish is not taken seriously, and is even mocked by Éomer. But Éowyn encourages her small friend to take his sword, and this, along with Aragorn's refusal of her love, drives her to disguise herself as a man to be able to seek battle for herself, for once casting her duty away.
In the end, Éowyn realizes that glory in battle is not what she truly wants and needs. While the wounds inflicted onto her by the Witch King heal she meets Faramir, and they fall in love with each other. By this time, she decides to seek a life of peace as a healer, casting away her sword and helm.
[Abilities]
+ Éowyn is very skilled at riding, like most Rohirrim, and has a strong bond with horses.
+ She's also good at handling a blade and a shield, even while riding.
+ Being raised by the King, Éowyn knows enough about matters of state to be trusted by her uncle to rule in his stead when he rides off to battle.
[Other important stuff]
She's a terrible cook, don't ever try her food.
[Sample post]
[First Person]
If you could go back home, would you? Why or why not?
I would go home if I could have the chance to fight for the ones I love and win glory and renown for myself. But if I must go back to a cage, I would much rather stay in this place, when I am not bound to such duties.
What were you doing before now?
I was wounded and left behind with the other hurt and sick, while everyone went off to battle, to protect their loved ones. I have already lost my Uncle, I would not like losing more of the people who are dear to me.
If someone provoked or attacked you, what would you do?
I would defend myself, of course. I am skilled enough with a blade.
Your country is in the middle of a war. What do you think of it? Do you support it or try to solve it yourself by going on an epic quest?
If I had my way, I would try do what I could by myself to solve the war, even if I must risk my own life. I would rather spare the lives of my Uncle and brother, so that they could keep on leading our people. However, if this were not possible, I would support my King, and wish to fight by his side.
Do you believe you can fly? Do you believe you can touch the sky?
Unfortunately, I am aware that the race of Men is unable to fly. However, I believe it must feel wonderful to touch the sky. It would bring me a sense of freedom that I would never need fear a cage again.
You are told that this is a dream world, but you must go deeper. What are your first thoughts?
I would hardly believe that is true. Probably whoever is telling me that must have drunk too much wine and is having strange visions.
[Third Person]
Éowyn wanders near the lake in Somni. She does not like being in this place. Even if she is free of her duties as the King's niece and ward, she is now in a cage of a different kind. When she arrived to this world, she was told there was no way of willingly leaving the dream. The young woman has tried her best to find a way out, especially after she heard about the special gates that transport people between worlds, but most likely, they require some magic or craft she does not posses. And for now, there is no one she knows in this world that knows how to work them. Not that she has made that many friends, being rather cold and distant to those who have tried to befriend her.
She stops for a moment by the shore, taking off her shoes, and stepping into the cool water, not caring that the hem of her dress is getting wet as well. It is a warm day, reminding her that summer will soon arrive, even in the world of dreams. The water freshens her skin and soothes her thoughts, but not nearly enough. She needs to go back home, to Rohan or Gondor. The shieldmaiden needs to know her brother is still alive... Éomer is all she has left, and if he dies, she will not forgive herself, for lingering in a dream while they offer their lives to save Middle-earth. Why is she always left behind, even after she has proven her worth? Maybe she needs to prove herself in this world as well, by finding a way to activate those dream gates and send herself home and into battle.
[Why do you want to play this character in Somarium?] Seems I just love this game... ;A; And the Tolkien cast needs a girl. XD
[Which rule was your favorite and why?] Well, I usually go with 'be nice' in my apps, but I also really like the 'no god-modding' one, because it's really annoying when another player takes decisions for your character IC without OOC consent.
[Where did you hear about Somarium?] (Optional)
[Any questions?] XD all clear
